The Administrative Behavior of Professional Training Colleges Establishments and Its Impact on Institutional Diversity
Abstract
This study aims to clarify the relationship between the administrative behaviors of professional training colleges and their sectoral and regional diversity. It is widely accepted that diversity is the defining feature of professional training colleges; however, there has been little research about how diversity varies over time and across regions, or about the mechanisms driving it. The data used for analysis were derived from a list of professional training colleges published by the Association for Technical and Career Education. First, this study analyzed patterns of establishment and closure of professional training colleges as key administrative behaviors. Findings indicate that establishments and closures occurred continuously, although they varied depending on time and region. Furthermore, administrative behaviors by the same corporation were defined as “expansion,” and this form of “expansion” was found to occur frequently in both the Business and Culture and the General Education fields. It was also found that “expansion” is more common in regions with high diversity across fields. These results lead us to conclude that “expansion” contributes to increasing the diversity of fields.
